Bed with radial drawers

Back

Bed was designed and built in the Spring of 1998 from (mostly) recycled fir studs, log scraps, and plywood.  It has been in daily use for almost seventeen years and has held up very well.

The action of the drawers is smooth and easy.  A child can lie on the bed and reach down with one arm and open them.

The curved boards are made from 1/8 inch strips of fir glued together.

The basket effect is from copper wire randomly threaded through galvanized staples.

A clear laquer was sprayed over the wire to keep it from tarnishing, and from staining things that come into contact with it.

The drawers ride on 2 plastic wheels apiece, fastened with lag screws.

The two drawers pivot on the hinge pin with screw eyes.  The hinge pin is made from a bent lag screw with the head cut off, which is screwed horizontally into a notched log leg.
